Trieste is MSC Cruises' Adriatic home port and one of the closest embarkation ports to Central Europe. Its sailings are often sold as “Trieste (Venice)” because large ships were banned from central Venice in 2021. An elegant Habsburg-era city on the Slovenian border, with grand seafront squares and legendary coffee houses, it is an easy start to cruises across the Adriatic, Greece and the eastern Mediterranean.
What to Do in a Day in Trieste

If you arrive a day early or have time before boarding, start at Piazza Unità d'Italia, the largest sea-facing square in Europe, right next to the cruise terminal, and stroll out along the Molo Audace pier. Walk along the Canal Grande, past the Roman theatre and up San Giusto hill for the cathedral, the castle and views over the gulf. Stop at a historic coffee house such as Caffè San Marco or Caffè degli Specchi. With more time, take a bus or taxi to the white Miramare Castle on the coast about 8 km away, or drive across the border to the Postojna Cave or the Lipica stud farm in Slovenia.
The tours below are not organized by the cruise lines. Bookings are made directly with GetYourGuide and you are responsible for getting back to the ship on time. If you prefer the cruise line's guarantee, contact our travel advisors after booking.
Cruise Port Address
Trieste Airport (TRS)
TRS is at Ronchi dei Legionari, about 35 km north-west of the cruise terminal. Regional trains run between the airport's own station (a short covered walkway from the terminal) and Trieste Centrale in about 30 minutes, and a taxi takes 35–45 minutes either way. Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is about 150 km away — around 1.5–2 hours by car or transfer.
City Centre (Piazza Unità d'Italia)
The Stazione Marittima sits on the waterfront right next to Piazza Unità d'Italia — the square, the Canal Grande and the old town are 5–10 minutes on foot, so no transport is needed for the centre.
Trieste Centrale Station
Trieste Centrale is about 1.5 km from the cruise terminal — a 15–20 minute walk along the seafront or a short taxi ride. Direct trains run between Trieste and Venice (Mestre / Santa Lucia) in about 2 hours, and the bus station next door has regional and international coach connections.

Frequently Asked Questions
Trieste is an easy drive from much of Central Europe; if your route crosses Slovenia, you'll need a Slovenian e-vignette for its motorways. MSC Cruises offers partner car parks with a shuttle to the terminal that can be booked in advance (prices depend on the length of your cruise, so check current rates when booking), and there are public car parks on the waterfront, such as Molo IV. Avoid the restricted traffic zones (ZTL) in the old town and check your parking confirmation for the exact drop-off point.
Since large cruise ships were banned from central Venice in 2021, MSC Cruises and other lines have moved many of their Venice sailings to nearby Adriatic ports, Trieste being one of the main ones. Venice is about 150 km away — roughly 2 hours by direct train or car — so you can easily combine your cruise with a stay in Venice before or after.
Yes. When Trieste is a port of call, MSC Cruises and other lines offer excursions, and for guests embarking here there are pre- and post-cruise programmes. Popular options include Trieste city walks, Miramare Castle, the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle in Slovenia, Ljubljana and day trips to Venice.
